Can dogs eat pumpkin?
Yes, in moderation Yes. Plain cooked pumpkin is a good fibre source. Never use pumpkin pie filling, which may have spices, sugar or xylitol.
Why
Pumpkin gives fibre, vitamins and potassium, and its soluble fibre can help firm up mild diarrhoea or ease mild constipation (AKC). RSPCA Australia lists cooked pumpkin as a suitable vegetable, and UC Davis lists baked butternut squash among example treats. Pumpkin pie mix may contain xylitol and spices such as nutmeg.
How to give it safely
Plain cooked or plain tinned pumpkin, no additives. For mild diarrhoea, AKC suggests 1 to 4 tablespoons added to a meal, starting small; see your vet first, and at once for a puppy with diarrhoea.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
