Can dogs eat Brussels sprouts?
Yes, in moderation Yes, a sprout or two, cooked and plain. More than that can cause wind and an upset stomach.
Why
Brussels sprouts are on Blue Cross's list of Christmas dinner foods a healthy dog can have a little of. PDSA suggests them steamed or boiled and only in very small quantities, because large amounts can cause illness. They are not toxic, but they cause gas, and too many bring stomach upset and diarrhoea (AKC).
How to give it safely
Steamed or boiled, plain, never raw. AKC suggests starting with half to one sprout depending on size, and no more than three at a time after that.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
