Can dogs eat cabbage?

Yes, in moderation Yes, in small amounts. Plain cabbage is fine for most dogs but can cause a lot of gas.

Why

Blue Cross says all varieties of cabbage are safe and healthy for dogs, and AKC's chief vet says cabbage is safe in moderation and is low in calories and high in fibre. It causes gas: AKC's chief vet warns that many dogs cannot handle a lot of it, especially breeds prone to bloat. Cabbage cooked with butter, onion or garlic should not be shared.

How to give it safely

Plain boiled or steamed, which upsets the stomach less than raw, diced small with the stem and core removed. Introduce it slowly. Ask your vet first if your dog is prone to bloat.

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
