Can dogs eat broccoli?
Yes, in moderation Yes, in very small amounts. Plain raw or steamed broccoli is fine, but too much irritates the stomach.
Why
Broccoli is high in fibre and vitamin C and low in fat, but its florets contain isothiocyanates, which can irritate the stomach (AKC). AKC's chief vet warns that a lot of broccoli can be toxic, so keep it to a little. PDSA says very small quantities only, and the same for Brussels sprouts. Stalks can block the oesophagus of a small dog.
How to give it safely
Raw or steamed, plain, chopped into bite-sized pieces, and only a little. Start with one small piece.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
