Can dogs eat beetroot?
Yes, in moderation Yes, a little plain beetroot, cooked or raw. Skip it if your dog has had bladder or kidney stones, and do not panic at pink wee.
Why
Dogs Trust lists beetroot among foods dogs can usually eat, and AKC says fresh beets are safe in moderation. Beets are high in oxalates, and VCA says dogs with calcium oxalate stones should not eat high oxalate foods such as beets. They are also fairly high in sugar and can cause gas or diarrhoea (AKC). The pigment can turn urine pink or red for 12 to 24 hours: AKC says see your vet if it lasts longer than a day. Tinned beets should have no added salt (AKC).
How to give it safely
Scrubbed and peeled, then boiled, roasted or grated raw, plain, in small pieces as an occasional treat.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
