Can dogs eat it?

Can dogs eat olives?

Only with care Only plain, pitted olives, and only a few. Most olives are soaked in brine, and the stones can choke a dog or block the gut.

Why

Olives are not toxic, and plain, unsalted, pitted olives rarely cause problems (AKC). The stones can choke a dog, block the airway or gut, or crack a tooth, and RSPCA Australia says never feed fruit stones. Tinned and pickled olives are often very salty, which can cause dehydration and, rarely, salt poisoning, and olives coated in garlic, seasoning or oil carry extra risks (AKC). Olives soaked in alcohol are dangerous.

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate olives

If your dog ate a lot of olives, especially with the stones in, call your vet for advice (AKC).

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.

How to give it safely

If you share, give only the occasional plain, unsalted olive with the stone removed, and never olives with garlic, seasoning or alcohol.

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
