Can dogs eat it?

Can dogs eat apricots?

Yes, in moderation Yes, a little fresh flesh with the stone removed. Never the stone, kernel, stem or leaves, which contain cyanide compounds.

Why

Pet Poison Helpline says dogs can eat apricot flesh but not the seeds or stems, and Dogs Trust lists apricots, without the stone, among foods dogs can usually eat. The stone, kernel, leaves and stems contain a cyanide compound (ASPCA, Pet Poison Helpline). A single stone or a few leaves is a low risk for cyanide poisoning, but hulled apricot kernels, sold as bitter apricot seeds, are a high risk, and signs can appear within 15 to 20 minutes (Pet Poison Helpline). RSPCA Australia says never feed fruit stones. Dried apricots are high in sugar.

If your dog ate apricots

If your dog ate apricot kernels, call your vet or an animal poison line now. A swallowed stone can also cause a blockage.

How to give it safely

Fresh flesh only, stone, stem and leaves removed, cut into small pieces. Keep dried apricots to a small, occasional treat because of the sugar (Pet Poison Helpline).

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
