Can dogs eat mushrooms?

Only with care Plain shop-bought mushrooms are generally safe, but RSPCA Australia says never feed them and cooked ones often carry garlic. Skip them.

Why

Sources differ. AKC says mushrooms from large grocery stores are generally safe for dogs, while RSPCA Australia lists mushrooms among foods never to feed. Mushrooms are usually cooked with butter, oil, garlic or onion, which bring their own problems, and dogs do not need them (AKC). Wild mushrooms are a different matter: see the wild mushrooms page.

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate mushrooms (shop-bought)

If it was a plain shop-bought mushroom, watch for an upset stomach. If it was a wild mushroom, or you are not sure, treat it as an emergency and call your vet.

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.

How to give it safely

We suggest you skip them. If a plain, cooked shop mushroom falls on the floor, it is unlikely to harm your dog.

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
