Can dogs eat lettuce?
Yes, in moderation Yes. Plain lettuce is safe and mostly water. Do not share salad, which may contain onion or dressing.
Why
Romaine, iceberg and rocket (arugula) are non-toxic to dogs, low in calories and about 90% water (AKC), and Pet Poison Helpline lists lettuces among safe, low calorie foods. Too much can cause diarrhoea, and big leaves are hard to digest. Salads often contain onions, which are toxic.
How to give it safely
Wash it well and chop it rather than giving whole leaves, especially to small dogs or fast eaters.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
