First year cost / United States
How much does a puppy cost in United States?
What the first year of a puppy costs in United States, item by item, from published figures in USD. The one published total is $3,221.
Published first year total: $3,221 USD (2021), from the publisher's own figure. That is their basket, not the sum of the rows below, and the two will not match.
Every item, with its source
These are typical ranges published by welfare charities, veterinary associations and government pages, not quotes for your puppy. What you actually pay depends on breed, size, coat, which city or council you live in and which vet you use, so treat every figure as a budgeting starting point rather than a price.
| What | Typical range | Type | Notes and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchase or adoption fee | $500 to $4,500 | One off | Shelter adoption fees run up to about $600. Breeder purchase runs about $500 to $4,500. These are Rover figures cited by Synchrony, because no US welfare or veterinary body publishes a purchase price range. Source |
| Initial vaccination course | $300 | One off | ASPCA publishes a single point figure of $300 for initial medical costs including vaccines, not a range. The table is marked 2021 UPDATE. Source |
| Spay or neuter | $300 | One off | ASPCA point figure, not a range. Low cost and shelter clinics charge less, but the ASPCA does not publish a floor. Source |
| Microchipping | $20 | One off | ASPCA point figure, not a range. Source |
| Dog licence | $9 to $34 | Ongoing | Set by municipality or state. New York City charges $8.50 a year for a spayed or neutered dog of any age, $8.50 for an unaltered dog under 4 months and $34 for an unaltered dog over 4 months. The ASPCA budgets $15 a year as a national placeholder. Source |
| Starter supplies | $210 | One off | ASPCA line items summed: crate $60, collar, leash and harnesses $60, carrier $50, grooming tools $40. The ASPCA table has no bed or bowls line, and budgets toys separately at $37 a year. Source |
| Food for the first year | $300 | Ongoing | ASPCA point figure, not a range, and marked 2021 UPDATE. It is the lowest food figure of any of the five countries here. Source |
| Routine vet care and parasite prevention | $410 | Ongoing | ASPCA routine medical costs $225 plus preventative medication for heartworm, fleas and ticks $185. Source |
| Pet insurance for the first year | $198 to $516 | Ongoing | Synchrony's 2025 Lifetime of Care study publishes $198 to $313 a year for health insurance and $422 to $701 a year for wellness plans. The ASPCA budgets $516 a year, above the top of Synchrony's insurance range. Source |
| Puppy training class | $200 | One off | ASPCA point figure for training assets, covering a class plus at home materials. Source |
| Grooming for the first year | $28 to $328 | Ongoing | Varies enormously by coat. The floor is the ASPCA's $28 a year for grooming supplies, which is what a short coated dog needs. The ceiling adds the ASPCA's $300 professional grooming line, which it lists as a special cost rather than a standard one. Source |
What this does not cover
- Emergencies, which is the argument for insurance or a dedicated savings account.
- Boarding, daycare and dog walkers, which vary enormously by city.
- Your time, which never appears in a table.
Where the sources disagree
- What a first year total includes. RSPCA NSW excludes the purchase or adoption price. OVMA excludes both the purchase price and grooming. The ASPCA includes insurance and training but its table is a 2021 update. No two of the five countries measure the same basket.
- The United States has two first year totals that barely overlap. The ASPCA sums to $3,221, Synchrony's study gives $1,300 to $2,800.
- Insurance figures measure different things. CHOICE's Australian $180 to $4,500 is a premium quote range, Moneysmart's $145 is average household outlay across insured and uninsured owners. Synchrony's US $198 to $313 sits well below the ASPCA's $516.
Other countries
These totals are not comparable between countries, because each publisher measures a different basket.
