First year cost / New Zealand

How much does a puppy cost in New Zealand?

What the first year of a puppy costs in New Zealand, item by item, from published figures in NZD. The one published total is $2,000 to $5,000.

Work out your own total

Published first year total: $2,000 to $5,000 NZD (2026), from the publisher's own figure. That is their basket, not the sum of the rows below, and the two will not match.

Every item, with its source

These are typical ranges published by welfare charities, veterinary associations and government pages, not quotes for your puppy. What you actually pay depends on breed, size, coat, which city or council you live in and which vet you use, so treat every figure as a budgeting starting point rather than a price.

WhatTypical rangeTypeNotes and source
Purchase or adoption fee $399 to $3,000 One off SPCA New Zealand charges $399 for a puppy under 5 months, $149 for a dog aged 5 months to 8 years and $75 for a senior, plus a $2.50 service charge. The fee already covers desexing, microchipping, vaccinations and the $15 lifetime Companion Animal Register fee. A purebred puppy from a breeder runs about $800 to $3,000. Source
Initial vaccination course $100 to $200 One off The full course of puppy vaccinations, all three rounds, including consultations. Nil if you adopt from SPCA. Source
Desexing $200 to $600 One off Males cheaper than females given the surgical requirements. Nil if you adopt from SPCA. The SPCA subsidised desexing programme is cats only, so it does not lower this figure for a puppy. Source
Microchipping $35 to $70 One off The New Zealand Companion Animal Register charges a separate flat $15, described as a one off charge for the life of the animal, so chip plus registration is $50 to $85. Nil if you adopt from SPCA. Source
Council registration $41 to $307 Ongoing Compulsory under the Dog Control Act and set by each council, for the 2026/27 registration year. Wellington: $41 for a dog adopted through SPCA or HUHA in their first year, $59 to $118 for a puppy depending on the month they are first registered, up to $306.50 for an adult entire dog registered late. Auckland: $78 to $225. Christchurch: $64 to $152. Auckland prorates a first registration by months remaining in the year. Source
Starter supplies $220 to $1,200 One off Summed from MoneyHub item ranges: dog home, bed, basket or crate $100 to $800, collars, leashes and coats $20 to $200, toys and chews $100 to $200. DogZen bundles the same kit at $300 to $600 and the Otago Daily Times at $150 to $500. No New Zealand source prices bowls separately. Source
Food for the first year $600 to $1,500 Ongoing Generic brands at $40 to $100 a month. Premium brands run to $2,400 a year and above. DogZen and the Otago Daily Times independently publish the same $600 to $1,500 band. Source
Routine vet care and parasite prevention $270 to $550 Ongoing DogZen: annual check ups and vaccinations $150 to $300, flea and worm control $120 to $250. This overlaps the puppy vaccination course above, so do not count both in full. A standard 15 minute vet consultation is $50 to $80. Source
Pet insurance for the first year $150 to $1,154 Ongoing Annualised from published monthly premiums quoted for a one year old male Jack Russell terrier in July 2026. Accident only starts at $12.47 a month, the most expensive premium policy is $96.19 a month. A mid market medium policy is roughly $370 to $910 a year. Source
Puppy training class $80 to $250 One off Prices published by New Zealand vet clinics for a full puppy school course: $80 for four nights, $90 for four sessions, $150 for four sessions, $250 for a five week course. Source
Grooming for the first year Not published Ongoing Not published as an annual figure. Varies enormously by coat and a short coated dog needs none. Animates publishes per session prices only: bath packages $57 to $105 and full grooms $61 to $219 depending on package and size. No New Zealand source publishes a visit frequency, so an annual total would be invented. Source
