First year cost / Canada
How much does a puppy cost in Canada?
What the first year of a puppy costs in Canada, item by item, from published figures in CAD. The one published total is $5,493 to $5,595.
Published first year total: $5,493 to $5,595 CAD (2025), from the publisher's own figure. That is their basket, not the sum of the rows below, and the two will not match.
Every item, with its source
These are typical ranges published by welfare charities, veterinary associations and government pages, not quotes for your puppy. What you actually pay depends on breed, size, coat, which city or council you live in and which vet you use, so treat every figure as a budgeting starting point rather than a price.
| What | Typical range | Type | Notes and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchase or adoption fee | $500 to $685 | One off | Ontario SPCA charges $685 for a puppy under 5 months, $500 at its Northwest centre. BC SPCA charges $580 for a puppy, Montreal SPCA $575. Ontario SPCA includes rabies for animals 3 months and older, BC SPCA explicitly does not. No Canadian authority publishes a breeder purchase price, so none is given here. Source |
| Initial vaccination course | $642 | One off | OVMA publishes a single figure of $642 for exams with vaccines in the puppy column, not a range. The adult dog column is $214, which is one annual booster visit rather than a puppy course. Source |
| Spay or neuter | $1,016 to $1,118 | One off | OVMA 2025: neuter $1,016, spay $1,118. The 2020 edition of the same study put it at $612, so this has nearly doubled in five years and is the single biggest driver of the rising Canadian total. Source |
| Microchipping | $45 to $137 | One off | BC SPCA values an in house chip plus lifetime BC Pet Registry registration at $45. OVMA's private practice average is $137. A threefold spread depending on where it is done. Source |
| Municipal dog licence | $25 to $71 | Ongoing | Set by municipality and the discount structures differ sharply. Toronto: $25 spayed or neutered, $60 unsterilized, half price at 65 and over. Calgary 2026: $45 altered, $71 unaltered. Vancouver: a flat $68 with no altered discount. OVMA models $25 as its provincial average line. Source |
| Starter supplies | $438 | One off | OVMA 2025 line items summed: crate $178, bed $78, bowls $44, collar and leash $55, toys $83. A point figure, not a range. The 2020 edition summed to $294. Source |
| Food for the first year | $866 to $1,418 | Ongoing | OVMA 2025 puppy food $866, adult dog food $1,418. The high end is relevant because a large breed puppy eats at adult volumes well before twelve months. The OVMA budget assumes a premium diet. Source |
| Routine vet care and parasite prevention | $411 to $603 | Ongoing | OVMA 2025 puppy column: parasite prevention $189, deworming $91, fecal exams $131. Adult dog column, the high end: parasite prevention $238, heartworm and Lyme test $125, fecal exams $66, wellness blood profile $174. Excludes the vaccination visit counted above and the $1,320 adult dental line, which is not a first year cost. Source |
| Pet insurance for the first year | $1,402 | Ongoing | OVMA 2025 point figure, which the study itself asterisks as an estimate depending on pet, policy and coverage choices. The 2020 edition was $933. This is by far the highest insurance figure of the five countries here. Source |
| Puppy training class | $555 | One off | OVMA 2025 obedience classes, a point figure. The 2020 edition was $460. Source |
| Grooming for the first year | Not published | Ongoing | Not published as an annual figure. The OVMA budget deliberately leaves grooming out, stating that no financial allowances have been made for professional grooming due to the variances in grooming requirements. Pets Plus Us publishes $50 to $200 per visit but no visit frequency, so any annual total would be invented. Source |
What this does not cover
- Emergencies, which is the argument for insurance or a dedicated savings account.
- Boarding, daycare and dog walkers, which vary enormously by city.
- Your time, which never appears in a table.
Where the sources disagree
- What a first year total includes. RSPCA NSW excludes the purchase or adoption price. OVMA excludes both the purchase price and grooming. The ASPCA includes insurance and training but its table is a 2021 update. No two of the five countries measure the same basket.
- Canada's total moved 20 percent in one edition. Ontario SPCA still quotes the older OVMA figure of $4,589 to $4,666 while OVMA's current 2025 study says $5,493 to $5,595.
- Canadian spay and neuter nearly doubled in five years, from $612 in the 2020 OVMA edition to $1,016 and $1,118 in 2025. It is the single biggest driver of the rising Canadian total.
- What a shelter fee covers is not standard. Ontario SPCA includes rabies vaccination for animals 3 months and over, BC SPCA explicitly does not, so a BC adopter has an extra vet visit an Ontario adopter does not.
- Grooming is the least sourced item everywhere. Canada's OVMA deliberately excludes it, New Zealand publishes only per session prices, and the Australian and UK annual figures shown here assume a coat that needs regular clipping. A short coated dog can need no professional grooming at all.
Other countries
These totals are not comparable between countries, because each publisher measures a different basket.
