Can dogs eat fish?

Yes, in moderation Yes, plain cooked fish with every bone removed. Skip battered, fried or seasoned fish.

Why

Fish is a healthy protein and a good choice for dogs allergic to chicken (AKC). Shorter-lived fish such as whitefish and flounder carry less mercury than tuna or swordfish. Bones are the biggest risk, as they can lodge in the mouth, throat or gut, and fish cooked in lots of oil can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis (AKC). RSPCA Australia says fish can be an occasional treat but not fed constantly, taking care to avoid bones. Raw fish can carry salmonella and listeria (AKC).

If your dog ate white fish

If your dog swallowed fish bones, call your vet: they can lodge in the throat or gut (AKC).

How to give it safely

Steamed, baked or poached, plain, boned and cooled. AKC suggests fish no more than twice a week.

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
