Can dogs eat ham?

Only with care A small sliver now and then will not hurt most dogs, but ham is salty and fatty, so it is a poor regular treat.

Why

Sources differ. PDSA lists small pieces of lean cooked ham among suitable treats, while AKC says ham is not advisable because shop ham is high in sodium and fat, which can lead to pancreatitis and excessive thirst. Keep the ham bone away: cooked bones splinter.

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate ham

If your dog ate a large amount of ham, make sure fresh water is available and call your vet if they vomit or seem in pain.

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.

How to give it safely

If you share, a small sliver of lean ham, occasionally, never the bone.

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
