Can dogs eat pork?
Only with care A little plain, well cooked, lean pork is fine for most dogs. Never raw, seasoned, fatty or on the bone.
Why
AKC says plain, cooked pork is safe in small amounts, but AKC also advises against giving cooked or seasoned pork, so the advice is not clear-cut. Pork fat is hard for dogs to digest and can trigger pancreatitis, rubs and sauces often contain garlic and onion, and raw or undercooked pork can carry the trichinella parasite. Cooked pork bones splinter.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Eating less or refusing food
- Painful tummy, or stretching into a "prayer" position (possible pancreatitis)
If your dog ate pork
If your dog ate fatty or seasoned pork, watch for vomiting and tummy pain and call your vet if they appear. Cooked bones need a call to your vet.
If your dog has eaten something toxic
Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.

How to give it safely
Only a small amount of plain, thoroughly cooked, lean pork with the fat trimmed and no bone, seasoning or sauce.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
