Can dogs eat sausages?

Only with care Best not. Sausages and hot dogs are fatty and salty, and often seasoned with onion or garlic. One stolen sausage is rarely an emergency.

Why

Sources differ. Dogs Trust lists hot dogs among foods dogs can usually eat in moderation, but AKC says hot dogs are full of unhealthy ingredients, and Pet Poison Helpline says fatty meats like sausages and hot dogs can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and pancreatitis. Many contain garlic or onion powder, and AKC notes that an average hot dog holds more than twice the sodium a medium sized dog needs in a whole day. RSPCA Australia warns that sausages and sausage meat can contain sulphite preservatives, linked to a thiamine deficiency that can be fatal, and ASPCA advises against processed meats. We use the more cautious verdict.

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate sausages and hot dogs

One sausage or hot dog will probably cause no more than a runny tummy for a day (AKC). Make sure your dog has water, and call your vet if diarrhoea lasts, comes with vomiting, or your dog seems in pain. Cooked sausage with onion, or a whole packet, is worth a call straight away.

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.

How to give it safely

Give a little plain cooked chicken, beef or pork with no seasoning instead (AKC).

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
