Can dogs eat salmon?
Yes, in moderation Yes, cooked and boneless. Salmon is a good source of protein and omega-3. Never raw: it can carry salmon poisoning disease.
Why
Cooked salmon gives protein and omega-3 fats (AKC). Raw or undercooked salmon and related fish can carry a parasite that causes salmon poisoning disease, which is fatal in 90% of untreated cases (AKC); it is found mainly on the Pacific coast of North America, from northern California to Puget Sound, and has been reported in Brazil (MSD Veterinary Manual). Small fish bones can choke or pierce the gut. Smoked fish is best avoided.
If your dog ate salmon
If your dog ate raw salmon, call your vet: signs can take up to a week.
How to give it safely
Bake, steam or grill with no seasoning or oil, cook through to 60Β°C (140Β°F), and remove every bone. Tinned salmon in spring water is fine occasionally. Keep fish occasional: AKC suggests no more than once or twice a week.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
