Can dogs eat rice?
Yes, in moderation Yes. Plain boiled rice is easy to digest and is often used in a bland diet after a stomach upset.
Why
Vets use plain white rice as a carbohydrate in bland diets because it is easy to digest (AKC), and RSPCA Australia lists a small amount of plain cooked rice as fine. White rice has a higher glycaemic index, so keep it small for diabetic dogs. It adds calories on top of a complete food.
How to give it safely
Boil in water with no salt, butter or seasoning. For a bland diet, AKC describes three parts rice to one part plain boiled chicken; ask your vet first.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
