Can dogs eat oatmeal?
Yes, in moderation Yes, cooked with water and plain. Oatmeal is a good fibre source, but skip instant, flavoured and milky versions.
Why
Oatmeal gives fibre, B vitamins and minerals and can suit dogs sensitive to wheat (AKC). Make it with water, as many dogs struggle with milk. Flavoured oatmeal often contains sugar, and additions such as chocolate, raisins or xylitol sweeteners are dangerous. Too much fibre can cause stomach upset.
How to give it safely
Cooked with water, plain, not instant. AKC suggests a small portion, and no more than half a cup once or twice a week for a large dog.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
