Can dogs eat it?

Can dogs eat Christmas cake or pudding?

No, toxic No. Fruit cake, Christmas pudding and mince pies are packed with raisins, sultanas and currants, which can cause kidney failure in dogs.

Why

These are packed with raisins, sultanas and currants, and RSPCA says even small quantities can lead to severe kidney failure within 24 to 72 hours. RSPCA Australia lists Christmas cake and pudding among festive foods that harm pets, and puddings and desserts made with alcohol add a second poison (AKC).

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate fruit cake and christmas pudding

Take your dog to the vet immediately, even if they seem fine (RSPCA). Tell the vet what was in it: the dried fruit, and any alcohol or chocolate.

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.
