About the Caucasian Shepherd Dog

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a mountain livestock guardian from the Caucasus, bred to live out with flocks and see off wolves without a handler present. Everything about it reflects that: heavy bone, a broad head, a thick weatherproof double coat, a range of 44.9 to 77.1 kg and 58 to 76 cm at the shoulder. At home it is quieter than people expect, slow moving and undramatic, but it makes its own decisions about who belongs on its ground and who does not.

Exercise needs are moderate, mostly long steady walks and hikes, always on lead or inside serious fencing. The coat needs regular brushing and drops heavily when it changes. This dog suits an experienced owner with land, secure boundaries and a genuine reason to keep a guardian breed. It is a bad fit for flats, frequent visitors and households with lots of other pets. The common error is reading its calm as easy going and postponing socialisation and containment until a problem appears.

What to expect at eight weeks

At eight weeks a Caucasian Shepherd Dog puppy is sleeping around 18 to 20 hours a day, is not house trained, and cannot hold on for more than an hour or two at a stretch. A giant breed puppy at eight weeks is already heavy and will keep growing for up to two years. Controlled growth matters more here than in any other size class, so a large breed specific puppy food and no overfeeding. Expect moderate energy, in short bursts separated by long naps. Grooming needs are moderate, so build the brushing habit now while the coat is still short and easy. The socialisation window is open and closing: everything it meets calmly now, from vacuum cleaners to men in hats, is easier for the rest of its life.
