Can dogs eat parsley?

Only with care A small sprinkle of curly parsley is fine. Large amounts can make skin sensitive to sunlight.

Why

Sources differ. ASPCA lists parsley as toxic to dogs because it contains furanocoumarins, which can cause sunburn-like skin inflammation, though large amounts are needed. AKC says curly parsley is safe in small amounts and advises avoiding Italian parsley, which it says can cause problems in large quantities. AKC's chief vet notes the same compounds are found in citrus. We use the more cautious verdict.

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate parsley

A garnish needs nothing. If your dog ate a lot of parsley and shows any of these signs, call your vet.

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.
