Can dogs eat it?

Can dogs drink milk?

Only with care Best not. Many dogs cannot digest lactose well, and RSPCA Australia says not to give dogs or puppies milk. Water is all they need.

Why

Sources differ. AKC says a few tablespoons now and then is fine for dogs that tolerate it, while RSPCA Australia says not to offer milk to dogs or puppies because it can upset their stomach, and ASPCA says pets lack enough of the enzyme lactase to digest it. Milk is also high in fat and natural sugar.

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate milk

Stop giving milk if you see loose stools or vomiting. Call your vet if it lasts more than a day or your dog seems unwell.

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.

How to give it safely

We suggest fresh water only. If you do give milk, a few tablespoons at most, not a bowlful (AKC).

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
