Can dogs eat it?

Can dogs eat cheese?

Only with care A small cube of plain cheese is fine for most dogs. It is fatty, some dogs cannot digest it, and never give blue cheese.

Why

Sources differ. AKC says most dogs can have cheese in small amounts and it makes a good training reward or pill disguise, while ASPCA warns that dogs lack enough lactase to digest dairy well. Cheese is high in fat, which risks weight gain and pancreatitis, and some cheeses contain garlic, onion or chives. Blue cheese has its own toxin. Lower fat cheeses such as mozzarella and cottage cheese are the better choice.

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate cheese

A small piece is rarely a problem. If your dog ate a lot, or a blue cheese, or one with garlic or chives in it, call your vet.

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.

How to give it safely

A small cube or a few shreds of a plain, lower fat cheese, as an occasional reward. Skip cheese for dogs that are overweight or have had pancreatitis.

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
