Can dogs eat it?

Can dogs eat gravy?

No, toxic No. Gravy often contains onion or garlic, which are toxic to dogs even when cooked, and rich gravy is fatty.

Why

Onions, garlic, leeks and chives damage red blood cells and can cause anaemia, even when cooked, and gravy often contains one or more of them (Dogs Trust). Blue Cross lists gravy under toxic Christmas foods for that reason. Rich gravies are also fatty and can bring on vomiting, diarrhoea, tummy pain or pancreatitis (Pet Poison Helpline).

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate gravy

Call your vet and say whether the gravy contained onion or garlic and roughly how much your dog had. Signs of onion poisoning can take a few days to show (Blue Cross), so do not wait for them.

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.
