Can dogs eat cat food?
Only with care A mouthful now and then will not harm most dogs, but cat food is too rich to be a regular part of their diet.
Why
Cat food is much higher in meat protein and fat than dog food, which is why dogs love it, but it does not have the right balance of nutrients for dogs (AKC). Eaten regularly it can lead to stomach upset, weight gain and pancreatitis, and AKC says the high protein can be hard on the liver and kidneys. Dogs Trust lists cat food among foods dogs can usually eat in moderation. An occasional theft may cause nothing more than vomiting or diarrhoea.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Tummy pain or a hunched back
- Not eating
- Lethargy
If your dog ate cat food
If your dog raided the cat bowl, watch them, and call your vet if they show signs of tummy trouble (AKC).
If your dog has eaten something toxic
Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.

How to give it safely
Not needed. Feed the cat, and store their food, where your dog cannot reach (AKC).
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
