About the Polish Lowland Sheepdog

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, known as the PON, is a shaggy herding breed that worked flocks on the Polish plains and is thought to sit behind several of the British bearded herding dogs. It is compact and muscular, roughly 13.6 to 22.7 kg and 43 to 51 cm tall, under a long double coat that falls over the eyes. The character is watchful and self possessed: clever, retentive, closely bonded to its family and reserved with people it does not know.

Expect a thorough brush at least once a week in full coat, or a shorter clip that still needs combing out. Exercise is daily and substantial, and the brain needs work too, because a bored PON invents jobs of its own. They are alert barkers and natural watchdogs. They suit experienced owners who enjoy training, with supervision and socialisation around children and other pets. The common mistake is skipping coat care until the mats are past brushing out and the dog has to be shaved.

What to expect at eight weeks

At eight weeks a Polish Lowland Sheepdog puppy is sleeping around 18 to 20 hours a day, is not house trained, and cannot hold on for more than an hour or two at a stretch. A medium breed puppy at eight weeks is a manageable armful that will not stay that way. Most of the growth happens between now and six months, so buy for the adult dog where you can. Expect moderate energy, in short bursts separated by long naps. Grooming needs are high. Start daily brushing and short, positive handling sessions at eight weeks, well before the adult coat arrives, or the first professional groom will be traumatic. The socialisation window is open and closing: everything it meets calmly now, from vacuum cleaners to men in hats, is easier for the rest of its life.
