Can dogs eat it?

Can dogs eat sunflower seeds?

Only with care A few shelled, unsalted seeds are fine. Never the shells, which can block the gut, and never salted seeds.

Why

ASPCA lists the sunflower plant as non-toxic to dogs, and AKC says plain raw or toasted sunflower seeds are among the healthier human foods to share now and then. The shells cannot be digested and can cause choking or a blockage, salted seeds can lead to salt poisoning, and the seeds are fatty, so too many can upset the stomach (AKC). AKC advises skipping them for dogs prone to pancreatitis or with a sensitive stomach.

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate sunflower seeds

If your dog ate a bag of seeds in their shells, or salted seeds, call your vet: shells can cause a blockage.

If your dog has eaten something toxic

Call your vet or the nearest emergency vet now. Do not wait for signs, and do not make your dog sick unless a vet tells you to. Take the packet with you.

How to give it safely

Shelled and unsalted only. AKC's limit is 10 to 20 seeds a week for a small dog and no more than 20 to 40 a week for a large dog, and a small spoonful of sunflower butter only now and then.

This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
