Can dogs eat popcorn?
Yes, in moderation Plain, air-popped popcorn is fine in small amounts. Buttered, salted or flavoured popcorn is not, and unpopped kernels can choke.
Why
Plain popcorn gives fibre and some minerals, and half a cup air-popped has about 16 kcal (UC Davis). Butter, oil, salt and toppings cause stomach upset and weight gain (AKC). Unpopped and half popped kernels are a choking hazard and can stick in teeth.
How to give it safely
Air-popped, no butter, oil, salt or flavouring, fully popped pieces only, a few at a time.
This is general guidance, your vet sets the actual schedule. Puppies, small dogs and dogs with a health condition can react to smaller amounts. Check with your own vet before changing what your dog eats.
