Can dogs eat pistachios?
Only with care Best avoided. Pistachios are not toxic in themselves, but they are fatty and salty, the shells choke, and mouldy ones carry aflatoxin.
Why
AKC's chief vet says pistachios are not toxic in themselves but are best avoided. They are high in fat and usually salted, which can lead to pancreatitis, and the shells can lodge in the throat. Mould on the shells can produce aflatoxin, which can cause weakness, stomach upset and even seizures.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Gagging or choking on shells
