About the Sprocker Spaniel
The Sprocker Spaniel crosses the Cocker Spaniel with the English Springer Spaniel, and Agria gives the United Kingdom as the country of origin, where the cross was first bred for field work. Adults are medium sized spaniels with a wavy, medium length coat in chocolate, black and white, brown and white or solid colours. Pet Health Club puts them at 40 to 50 cm and 15 to 20 kg, while Agria gives 38 to 51 cm and 13 to 20 kg. Life expectancy is 12 to 15 years from Pet Health Club and 10 to 14 years from Agria, so the range here runs from 10 to 15.
Sprockers need a lot of exercise: Agria recommends at least one to two hours a day, with off lead running and scent games, and most love water. Pet Health Club advises a quick daily brush and a more thorough one each week, a bath after swimming and close attention to the long, floppy ears, which are prone to infection. They can settle in a smaller home if well exercised, though a house with a large, secure garden suits them best. The common mistake is treating a Sprocker as a casual pet, because an under exercised one gets bored and starts chewing, barking or digging.
A cross, not a breed. The Sprocker Spaniel is a cross rather than a standardised breed, so size, coat and drive vary and can favour either parent, and puppies from one litter can differ. Agria describes the usual parents as a working Cocker Spaniel and a Springer Spaniel. Ask what is known about eye and hip health in both parents, since progressive retinal atrophy and hip dysplasia are both on Agria's list for the cross.
What to expect at eight weeks
At eight weeks a Sprocker Spaniel puppy is sleeping around 18 to 20 hours a day, is not house trained, and cannot hold on for more than an hour or two at a stretch. A medium breed puppy at eight weeks is a manageable armful that will not stay that way. Most of the growth happens between now and six months, so buy for the adult dog where you can. This is a high energy breed. At eight weeks that shows up as intensity rather than stamina, and they will need a job to do long before they need long walks. Grooming needs are high. Start daily brushing and short, positive handling sessions at eight weeks, well before the adult coat arrives, or the first professional groom will be traumatic. The socialisation window is open and closing: everything they meet calmly now, from vacuum cleaners to men in hats, is easier for the rest of their life.
Health worth knowing about
Conditions this breed is reported to be predisposed to. Predisposed does not mean inevitable, it means ask about it.
- Ear infections, because the long, floppy ears trap moisture and dirt; regular ear checks and cleaning help, and some dogs need ongoing treatment
- Hip dysplasia, which can cause stiffness, pain and mobility problems and may need pain relief, physiotherapy or surgery
- Progressive retinal atrophy, an inherited eye condition that gradually affects eyesight and can lead to blindness
- Familial nephropathy, an inherited kidney disease seen in some spaniel breeds that needs ongoing care and monitoring
- Allergies to fleas, food or pollen, which can cause itchy skin, sore ears or stomach upsets
- Dental and gum disease and weight gain, which routine six monthly vet checks help pick up early
- Seizure disorders, one of the five conditions most often claimed for Sprockers in Agria's 2025 claims data, alongside hind leg problems, hypersensitivity, foreleg problems and swallowed foreign bodies in the stomach
