About the Corgipoo
The Corgipoo, also known as the Corgidoodle, crosses a corgi, usually the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, with a Miniature or Toy Poodle. Daily Paws gives adults as 25 to 38 cm (10 to 15 in) and 4.5 to 13.6 kg (10 to 30 lb), with a lifespan of 10 to 18 years. The coat can be the Pembroke's short, thick double coat, the Poodle's curls or something in between, in almost any colour, and the ears may stand up or flop. Nobody recorded when the first Corgipoo was bred.
A vet quoted by Daily Paws suggests at least 45 minutes a day outdoors plus puzzles and training games, but short legs mean they are not built for running or long hikes. Grooming depends on the coat: Daily Paws suggests starting with a brush every few days, while a vet on the page recommends daily brushing or combing and regular groomer visits for a curly Poodle-type coat. They can live in a flat if walked on a lead, and they gain weight easily, so count the treats from the start. Supervise them with young children, who can hurt a dog this small without meaning to.
A cross, not a breed. The Corgipoo is a cross rather than a standardised breed, so size, coat, ears and tail vary and puppies from one litter can look very different. Ask whether the parents were screened: Daily Paws says responsible Pembroke breeders screen for hip and elbow dysplasia, eye conditions, degenerative myelopathy, heart problems and von Willebrand disease, and Poodle breeders for hip dysplasia and eye problems.
What to expect at eight weeks
At eight weeks a Corgipoo puppy is sleeping around 18 to 20 hours a day, is not house trained, and cannot hold on for more than an hour or two at a stretch. A small breed puppy at eight weeks is light enough to carry everywhere, which is exactly how you get them socialised before the vaccination course finishes. They will still need four meals a day. Expect moderate energy, in short bursts separated by long naps. Grooming needs are high. Start daily brushing and short, positive handling sessions at eight weeks, well before the adult coat arrives, or the first professional groom will be traumatic. The socialisation window is open and closing: everything they meet calmly now, from vacuum cleaners to men in hats, is easier for the rest of their life.
Health worth knowing about
Conditions this breed is reported to be predisposed to. Predisposed does not mean inevitable, it means ask about it.
- Hip and elbow dysplasia, which responsible breeders of both parent breeds screen for
- Eye conditions, screened for in both Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Poodle parents
- Degenerative myelopathy, which Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeders screen for
- Heart problems and von Willebrand disease, which Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeders also screen for
- Patellar luxation and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, a hip disorder, from the small Poodle side
- Obesity, which both parents are prone to, with a vet able to advise how much to feed
- Dental disease, which small dogs are prone to, managed with brushing at home and professional cleaning at the vet
