About the Calupoh
The Calupoh is a Mexican breed recreated in the late twentieth century by crossing domestic dogs with grey wolves, an effort to bring back the wolf dog that appears in pre Hispanic Mesoamerican art and burials. It is a lean, long legged, wolfish looking animal with a short flat coat, most often black. Despite the appearance the temperament is described as balanced and sociable: attached to its household, friendly with the people it knows, and workable with other dogs given proper socialisation.
It is athletic and needs plenty of exercise, with daily walks, play inside secure fencing and activities such as tracking, herding or agility, and it should stay on lead in open ground. Grooming is light, a quick brush every few days and rather more when the coat drops once or twice a year, plus monthly nail trims. It is intelligent and does not tolerate boredom. The main risk is buying one for the wolf look and skipping the work the dog actually needs.
What to expect at eight weeks
At eight weeks a Calupoh puppy is sleeping around 18 to 20 hours a day, is not house trained, and cannot hold on for more than an hour or two at a stretch. A large breed puppy at eight weeks looks deceptively normal sized and will roughly double every few weeks for a while. Keep exercise short and low impact, the growth plates are wide open. Expect moderate energy, in short bursts separated by long naps. Grooming is straightforward, but start handling the coat, feet and ears in week one anyway so it is never a fight later. The socialisation window is open and closing: everything it meets calmly now, from vacuum cleaners to men in hats, is easier for the rest of its life.
